Step #8: Hire a moving company and pack everything up
After moving 4 times in about 4 years and doing all of the moves ourselves to save money, my husband and I promised ourselves that this move was not going do be done by us. When we were saving for our home, we budgeted enough money to pay a moving company to move us from A to B.
So, once we started packing things up, we looked into moving companies. After checking out about half a dozen, we were starting to get worried. There were so many people that had problems with moving companies. Either their property was damaged, the movers arrived late and were slow, or they were charged extra for nonsense like lots of stairs or an extra heavy piece of furniture.
After weeks of searching, we thought we were going to have to end up moving ourselves again, just to avoid the headache of dealing with movers. And right when we were about to give up, my husband came across a company called Firemen Movers. He told me the name and I thought he was joking. When he told me they were actually firemen, I really thought he was joking. But he wasn’t.
The reviews that we found on this company were 99% positive (and there were a lot of them), so we crossed our fingers and booked them for our move.
And then, we started packing like crazy.
Step #9: Say hello to our new house
Our closing date finally made an appearance on October 19th and as soon as our lawyer gave us the go-ahead, we went to pick up the keys and check out this piece of real estate that was now all ours. We couldn’t have been more excited.
I brought a bunch of stuff with me, just so we would have it ready to go on moving day, such as cleaning supplies, snacks, bottled water and bedding. When we arrived at the house, we walked in, dropped everything down on the floor and started exploring.
My husband discovered a sweet card and bottle of wine on top of the fireplace that the previous homeowners had left for us. It made me smile.
We dropped Elliott off at my mom’s house so that we wouldn’t have to worry about him getting in the way when we moved the next day. Kaylee stayed with us because she was teething and extremely cranky. I didn’t want to pass her off to my mom when she was like that!
Step #10: Say hello to our new house – for real
We moved in 3 days later.
On moving day, our firemen friends arrived right on time and began packing everything into their truck. We were very unprepared and didn’t pack enough beforehand, so there was still quite a bit that needed to be packed (especially in the kitchen). So, we packed up as much as we could while the movers did their thing.
After about 3 hours, we were ready to go. We still had a bunch of stuff left to pack, but had about a week left at our rental home and decided we would come back for the rest of the stuff later (we had to come back to clean anyway).
Then, we were on our way to the new house…
