I received this great frugal tip from my best friend, Erica!
I was trying to clean some tarnished silver items that I have and I’ve discovered that the easiest way to clean tarnished silver is to use a paste of baking soda and water. Since I didn’t have any baking soda available I used white toothpaste. Any brand of white toothpaste will work. I think I used Colgate.
This is what I did: I squirted some white toothpaste onto my tarnished silver item and then used an old toothbrush to lightly rub the paste all over the silver. Once the item was covered, I rinsed well and then patted the item dry with an old towel. Voila. The tarnish was removed. Some spots needed some extra scrubbing, but the majority of the tarnished was removed.
Another tip: Make sure not to use paper towels when drying your item, as it can scratch the silver. Also, do not wear rubber gloves, as rubber promotes tarnish.
