Coupons – are they worth it?

Are Coupons Worth It

When people find out how often I use coupons, they often ask me if I find using coupons worth my time.

The answer is always a resounding yes, absolutely.

If I didn’t use coupons, I wouldn’t be able to shop in my basement.

Or color my hair for free.

Or moisturize my skin for free.

Or eat bowl after bowl of free cereal, and then washing those bowls with free dishwasher detergent.

I wouldn’t be able to pay $40 for $240 worth of items.

And I certainly wouldn’t be able to be paid to shop… like this $170 haul I was essentially paid $25 to take home after mail-in rebates.

How much time do I spend hunting for deals?

– 15 minutes per day ordering/printing coupons online
– 1 hour per week clipping and organizing coupons
– 1 hour per week planning our weekly menu, my shopping list and pulling coupons
– 1-2 hours per week to grocery shop

So for 3-4 hours per week, I am able to buy groceries at less than 50% off the regular price, try products I would not normally buy due to price, shop in my own home when I run out of something, and donate to those less fortunate.

So, yes, couponing is worth it.

Do you think it’s worth it to use coupons?

Wow, wow and WOW!!!!! I am in awe. I truly never believed it was possible to do that in Canada. I have only got things free with coupons a few times. I have got to get better at this. I only work four days a month, so I have nothing but time to learn.

Would love to be able to dye my own hair. I have never done it, plus I have highlights, so I might wreck my hair. I would try it if it was free though. Also, the dog food and cereal how do you manage to get that for free???

One more thing, do you get many hassles with printed coupons? And I have heard that mail in rebates can be a pain too, what do you think overall?

I’ve started to follow your blog after seeing your link on sc. I’m relatively new to couponing and amazed already at what I’m saving, I’m looking forward to getting to the point where I spend next to nothing. I’m in the 40-60% savings range after just a few months, but am looking forward to bumping it to the next level. I’m starting to get organized for MIR rebates and the rewards programs. THanks for the continued inspiration! I only thought savings like that were possible in the states, or at the least out west with London Drugs.

thanks kelly! i’m glad i can inspire you to save by using coupons. if you need any help with MIRs or the rewards programs, let me know. i’d be happy to help!

theresa, the dog food.. i have got many different brands. my dogs are not picky and will eat whatever i give them so i buy what is the best price. the pedigree in the photo above was actually $10 a bag, not free, but that is a crazy good price for pedigree for the huge bags! everything else in that photo was free, i pretty much only paid for the dog food. how was it free? ONLY COUPONS, no mail in rebates. some coupons gave me overage and the overage went toward regular groceries like the tomatoes and sour cream. the free cereal.. it was $1.99 awhile back and there were $2.00 coupons. πŸ™‚ i dont get many hassles with printed coupons. as long as i am not using a crazy amount of them at a time. i usually only have like 10 printed coupons (or less) per transaction. if i do have any problems, i just tell the cashier to call the manager and they usually OK the coupons. mail in rebates are fine too.. only had a handful of bad experiences and i’ve sent away for a bajillion MIRs!

I am making this a big goal of mine is to become the super couponer also. I am a stay at home mom and we are a low income family with 3 kids and our rent it super high so i try to save as much money anywhere i can and this a has helped soooo much and were not the struggling low income family, always fighting about money anymore! Its totally worthwhile to be able to save my family some money using coupons.. get things for free.. especially being a stay at home mom.. every extra dollar (cent) saved counts. πŸ™‚
I would love to get free hair dye.. was that with coupons or a MIR?

How much moisturizer do you go through??? LOL. I think I go through maybe 3-4 of those containers per year.

  12. Cassie Howard

haha oh i only use like 3 or 4 a year too. but i donate a ton, give some to friends/family and sell some too. πŸ™‚

  13. David Bergeron

Cassie, well said! The dishwashing soup under the cereal made me laugh πŸ™‚

Sami, I stocked up with 61 delissio flatbread pizzas when they were $5 with $5 off coupon πŸ™‚ Beat that πŸ˜› Actually, I got 21 cents back because I got 7 for $4.97

  14. Cassie Howard

ugh, so jealous of all of your pizzas! i think we got 9 or 10.. wish we had more! i love the tuscan style chicken!

  15. David Bergeron

Ya, the tuscan style chicken is my favourite too! I haven’t tried the mushroom one, have you?

I think I got 15 tuscan chicken, 15 pepper and 10 mushroom. I also got about 20 think crust, deluxe, 4 cheese and pepperoni. My friend got 6 regular size Delissio, they’re like double the size of flatbread lol.

Anyway, I think I have way too much pizza so I gave some away and I guess I’ll have a lot of pizza parties πŸ™‚

  16. Cassie Howard

never tried the mushroom because ewwwww mushrooms! πŸ˜›

we also got the pepperoni/pepper one, 4 meat, chicken & spinach. only tried the 2 chicken ones and liked the tuscan style the best. am very excited to try the other 2. mmm pizza

  17. M.

Wait, how did you guys get different flavors/types with that coupon? I thought the coupon was just for the crispy flatbread pizza, with 3 choices: mushroom / tuscan chicken / pepperoni. What pizza did you guys get??

  18. Cassie Howard

i thought the coupon just said delissio pizza, i hardly read it LOL. oops! noticed that after i got 4 of the wrong pizzas, so the next time i used the coupon i got the correct one!

  19. Joyce

Do I love to get free stuff while using coupons? You bet I do. For example I bought 2 Baby Rays BBQ sauce at Walmart just yesterday with the Smartsource coupons ,result FREE! So many great things free or next to free ,too numerous to mention. Although the 3 grocery stores in town WILL NOT accept printed coupons I still can do some major savings without the printed ones. Very happy to have Shoppers Drugs accept them.

Are they worth it? Absolutely! A little effort, with big rewards! The long term goals have become short term as more money saved on groceries has been put towards achieving goals quicker. House reno’s paid off two years sooner and mortgage is about 3 years from being paid off, 7 years ahead of schedule! That’s with a newer/not new car purchase thrown in there too! And with checkout 51 available, the $aving$ are really something to be proud of. I find having a goal to work towards really helps with budgeting and saving and keeps me on track!
