Today was ‘tackle the front closet’ day. I’ve been meaning to clean out this black hole for months and TODAY WAS THE DAY!
To start, I took every single thing out of the closet and gave the floor a good vacuuming. Man, there was so much crap in there. Plant food (from the plant that died over 2 months ago), dog collars we no longer use, shoes we no longer wear, a phone book, a bunch of wrenches and a lot of other junk that really did not need to be in there. Once everything was out, I sorted through it all and had 3 separate piles.
1. Stuff that needs to go somewhere else.
2. Stuff that can go back in the closet.
3. Stuff that can go back in the closet, but I need to find a way to organize it.
When that was done, I loaded everything back in the closet.
Here is what the top of the closet looked like before:

First is the diaper bag, then gloves, hats, dog bags (that we use for dirty diapers too!) and the big container on the end holds all of my swiffer cleaner pads and my TV cleaning stuff. On top of that last bin is a small container that holds the dogs’ leashes and beside that is a lint roller.
Please ignore the red jacket on the left. I actually meant to take it out so it could be washed. It’s not there anymore!

I got rid of the shoes we no longer wear and now the shoe rack holds all of our shoes that we wear on a regular basis. To the side of the shoe rack is where our winter boots will go. Maybe. I might just bring out one of those ugly plastic mats and put it by the front door for those wet boots.
Oh and that little container on top of the shoe rack holds some gum, a pen, my sunglasses and our mailbox key.
I also put up some hooks on the door for our scarves:
It looks so much nicer in there, but I still hate it. I can never seem to organize it and completely love it. Ideally I would like to have a dresser (yes, a dresser) by the front door and it would hold most of the stuff that is on the shelf, so that we’d have more space in the closet. However, I don’t know if that’s a good idea because we are really trying not to spend any money on household stuff until we eventually buy our own home.
Who knows, maybe I will just get so annoyed and totally re-do the space. Until then, I’m happy with how it looks (kinda). I know it will work much better for us now.
What did you organize this week?
