Shop for free with coupon overage at Walmart

How to shop for free with coupon overage.

Today I’m going to talk to you about something that every couponer loves, and that is coupon overage. There are a few stores in Canada that allow coupon overage, but this video is specifically about Walmart. How to get coupon overage at Walmart.

What is coupon overage?

Coupon overage is when you purchase a product that costs less than what your coupon value is. For example, let’s say you purchase a bottle of Pantene shampoo and it’s on sale for $1.50. You have a coupon that has a value of $2.

That means, you will be able to use that $2 coupon on your $1.50 bottle of Pantene and you will actually make $0.50 from Walmart.

What can you use the coupon overage for?

There are two things you can do with that coupon overage. First, you could take that cash back, or you could use that coupon overage toward other items that you’re purchasing. Things like milk and produce and meat – things that don’t often have coupons available for them.

This is what I personally recommend, but of course, if you don’t have anything else to purchase, you can always take the cashback.

How to get coupon overage

So, how do you get this coupon overage (other than finding the cheap product and having the great coupon)? What you need to do is the same thing you do when you use regular coupons at Walmart – just hand your coupons to the cashier.

If you ever have any problems with a cashier refusing to give you coupon overage, make sure that you have the Walmart coupon policy printed and with you so that you can show them that they’re supposed to give you cashback or give you the coupon overage toward your other purchases.

You should always have this policy with you when you go shopping at Walmart – just in case you come across any problems when you’re checking out.

So, have you received coupon overage at Walmart before? Let me know in the comments!

Yes, I have received coupon overages at Walmart on a few occasions, but have also received just the purchase price part of the coupon and not the overage.

  2. jessielyn

how many the same coupons allowed in wallmart?

    • Cassie Howard

      There is no limit. 🙂

      • jessielyn

thats great Cassie. I will shopping in walmart if i have lots of coupons. Here in my place in No frills scarborough, before they allowed 4 coupons, but now only one coupon per purchase.I e mail the head office and tell them that one coupon per purchase and one coupon per transaction are completely different. But when they respond they said its only allowed one coupon per product during each visit…:(

      • Ali

Here in Regina, we are only allowed 1 same coupon, and we don’t get overages. If the price of the coupon is more than the product, I am not able to use that coupon.

    • Josie

There IS a limit. That limit is usually around 6, but it’s Store Manager discretion …
Usually for coupons that give you overage, it’s even less than that! 4 or less.
Again, Store Manager discretion so it will be a little different each store you go to.

      • Cassie Howard

As per their coupon policy, there is no limit to the amount of coupons one can use in a transaction. This was confirmed by head office. 🙂

        • Lori

I work there and we are told a limit of 6 printable coupons per customer for the same item.

Well I got a sweet deal at Walmart in Airdrie a couple of days ago…I used a Glade SAVE $5 when you spend $10…..Coupon 51 app which gave you a $5 credit on Glade…..plus I found the exact product needed on sale at Walmart. 2/$10…..so it was FREE. But that is not all….I looked and found that the products that I was buying had manufacturers sticker coupons on the product…BYGO….so when I went to the cashier this is how it went down. Yes it came to two FREE products as suspected….but with the Sticker she gave me back the actual price of the one item as my overage (7.43). Not the $5. (Must have been on a roll back 2/10?)….so my overage of $7.43 bought me some bread and produce for FREE!

I have to thank this site (my fav) and all of my new couponer friends who have taught me so much these past few months. I am a beginner but absolutely hooked!!!!!

    • Ali

Same thing happened to me! Instead of the $5, he took off $6.93, so I paid $4.03 for 2 Glade refills – $5 from CO51.

      • Kris

That’s because it’s a “deal”: you have to buy 2 to get the 2 for $10. If you only buy one, it’s a different price (i.e. $7.43).

        • Ali

I was talking about the coupon. I did buy 2, but instead of taking $5 for the coupon, he took off $7.93. I know that if you only buy one it’s going to be regular price. lol

          • Ali

            *$6.93, not $7.93

so then i donated lots, gave some to friends and keep them for our daily bbq needs!!!
i am always looking for the next deal!

I have never received coupon overage at Walmart, but I have given it instead. I used to be a cashier, and when it happened (which I didn’t think was possible in Canada until it did), I thought it was the most interesting thing ever!

It’s a funny story, but the lady who received overage from me at the Walmart I worked at was also the lady to recommend MrsJanuary to me.

    Cheers!

Walmart here in Surrey, BC has gotten finicky over coupons. I notice supervisors hover when I get to the cash register. They’ve told me no printed coupons at all, new policy, but then a month later, they’re okay with them. I’ve had someoverages, but I’m always using it for other things that don’t come with overage, just good sales.

  8. justine

I have had overages and loved them! However im finding that after leaving the walmart here(Orillia) crying twice now….a couple of the managers dont like couponers. Ive now learnt to make smaller transactions all at once , this way i dont need a csm over ride for using too many coupons. Overages are fantastic but not when managers dont care about coupon policies or what head office says. (been in touch with the owner of this walmart twice now- very nice man and did everything he can to fix it)

I had a great day at Walmart this morning….12 tubes of Colgate TOTAL, PM SDM 99 cents used 12 x $1.50 coupons, two bottles Sweet Baby Ray..1.97 each and used two $2.00 coupons, one 1.89 bottle of SunRype apple juice $2.00, bag of potatoes and small bag of green beans….I figured REGULAR PriCE would be about $45.00 and THEY PAID ME 85 cents to carry it out of the store!!!!!( the toothpaste I split into TWO orders….one for myself and one for my grandson, as store limit is 6 per customer( they are all for a donation)

  10. Simonsays

Yes, using the Chapman’s coupon….did a PRICE MATCH using another retailer’s circular to buy the Chapmans Premium Ice Cream for $3.99 at Walmart then used the $5.00 coupon – $3.99 price =$1.01 overage on the rest of my Walmart shopping.

I am very grateful for this value because while some Canadian politicians are focused on things they care about, I care about LOWER GROCERY PRICES and these are rare.

Walmart’s guidelines (Walmart Canada has no official coupon policy, they loosely follow the U.S. policy with the guidelines they have for the stores) state for overage that it “may” be given: does not mean they will. With the P&G coupons now stating no overage (and the guidelines predate this coupon term), I questioned Head Office in Canada on what may happen at the register. Their response was “the cashier would adjust the value of the coupon to the selling price when the selling price is less than the coupon value”.

Good God.. I stopped using coupons at Walmart long ago as I found the cashiers to be like Coupon Nazis!!!! Right before Christmas I bought hair dye and it had a coupon attached right to the package the cashier scoured over the thing from the manufacturer attached by manufacturer like it was a horrible thing. My mom was with me and she said boy they really don’t like you using coupons eh? You Got that Right I said. Stuff you Walmart!!!

    • Shannon

Because sometimes the coupons attached are not actually for the product you are purchasing but for another product that they are hoping you will try?

And cashiers scruitinizing coupons? Doing their jobs. Do you know how many cashiers get written up because they failed to look over the coupon and accepted it on the wrong product?

  13. Sher

I used overage at Walmart Canada in new westminster (BC) location 3 times Nov 2015 and it worked great. I was dealing with regular cashiers too. Today I went to the Burnaby (BC) one and I had a customer service Manger as my cashier and she refused to give overage of my Chapman manufacturer coupon. I told her Walmart gives overage and she said they dont. So she can only take off exact price of the ice cream ($3.88 instead of giving me $4 off and give $0.12 towards my other items that I was paying for). As she was scanning my items, she added “well, we used to have overage long time ago, but not anymore.” I couldn’t argue with her as it’s mere $0.12 and there was a line up at express check ou. but I didn’t like how she made things up and brushed me off. Too bad I didn’t have a printed policy with me to show her cause I thought she’s the manager, she should know better. So I went home to check online. The USA Walmart coupon policy still says they take overage. I will go back to the other Walmart later to see if they still give overage someday.

    • Shannon

The U.S. policy indicates “may” ….. does not imply that indeed you will get overage, much less as cash or a gift card, rather than applied to the transaction.

Coupon terms must be followed. Some manufacturers are indicating right in the terms no overages; some are even indicating the number of the same coupon that can be used in a transaction.

Manufacturers are starting to crack down on overage. Coupons are off the selling price of the item; selling price is less than coupon value, why should one get overage? And one manufacturer paying for other manufacturers’ products with overage? Company x isn’t going to tolerate their coupon buying y manufacturers’ products because of overage. Hence why a lot of retailers’ policies indicate they will adjust the amount of the coupon down to the selling price of the item. Something Walmart should also do.
